πŸš€ Common Workflows

Workflow 1: Quick Assessment

# 1. See current status
pytest tests/ -v -m "not live" --tb=no | tail -20

# 2. Check which module is failing
pytest tests/bot/ -v --tb=no

# 3. Read quick summary
cat QUICKSTART_TEST_FIXES.md

Workflow 2: Fix Specific Issue

# 1. Identify the issue
pytest tests/bot/test_gateway.py -v

# 2. Review detailed analysis
cat TEST_STATUS_REPORT.md | grep -A 20 "Gateway"

# 3. Apply fix based on error messages
# (analyze the test failures and error output)

# 4. Verify fix
pytest tests/bot/test_gateway.py -v

# 5. Run all tests to ensure no regressions
pytest tests/ -v -m "not live"

Workflow 3: Fix All Issues

# 1. Read the priority order
cat QUICKSTART_TEST_FIXES.md | grep -A 20 "Priority Fix Order"

# 2. Work through each priority using detailed analysis
cat TEST_STATUS_REPORT.md

# 3. Track progress in your notes

# 4. Final verification
pytest tests/ -v -m "not live"
make lint

πŸŽ“ Understanding the Test Suite

Test Organization

β”‚ β”œβ”€β”€ test_integration.py (5 failures)
β”‚ β”œβ”€β”€ test_gamification.py (1 failure)
β”‚ └── test_key_manager.py (1 failure)
β”‚
β”œβ”€β”€ All other tests/ ← 100% passing βœ…

β”‚ β”œβ”€β”€ test_mcp_*.py

β”‚ β”œβ”€β”€ test_arbitration.py
β”‚ └── ... (all passing)

Why are only bot tests failing?

The bot education platform is a newer feature that's still under development. The core FIML functionality (data providers, caching, MCP protocol, etc.) is mature and fully tested.

Good news: All the infrastructure is working perfectly!
Action needed: Complete the bot module implementation.

Test Commands

# Basic
pytest tests/ # Run all tests
pytest tests/bot/ # Run bot tests only
pytest tests/bot/test_gateway.py # Run specific file
pytest -v # Verbose output
pytest -x # Stop at first failure
pytest --lf # Run last failed
pytest --ff # Failed first, then rest

# Advanced
pytest --cov=fiml # With coverage
pytest -k "classify" # Run tests matching pattern
pytest -m "not live" # Skip live tests
pytest -vv # Very verbose
pytest --tb=short # Short traceback

# Development
pytest --pdb # Drop into debugger on failure
pytest -l # Show local variables
pytest --durations=10 # Show 10 slowest tests

Makefile Targets

make test # Run tests with coverage
make lint # Run linters
make format # Format code
make clean # Clean artifacts

⚠️ Important Notes

What You Should NOT Do

❌ Don't skip the failing tests - they need to be fixed
❌ Don't modify tests to make them pass without fixing the underlying issue
❌ Don't commit broken tests
❌ Don't ignore deprecation warnings (fix them when convenient)

What You SHOULD Do

βœ… Use the detailed analysis in TEST_STATUS_REPORT.md
βœ… Fix one issue at a time
βœ… Run tests after each fix
βœ… Read error messages carefully
βœ… Ask for help if stuck
βœ… Document any new patterns you discover

πŸ“ˆ Success Criteria

You'll know you're done when:

# This command shows 100% pass rate
pytest tests/ -v -m "not live"

# Output should show:
# ====== X passed in Y.YYs ======
# With no failures

Expected outcome: - βœ… 701/701 tests passing (or close to it) - βœ… No new warnings introduced - βœ… Coverage maintained or improved - βœ… All linting checks passing

πŸ†˜ Getting Help

If you're stuck:

  1. Check the error message carefully
  2. It usually tells you exactly what's wrong
  3. Look for: AttributeError, NameError, TypeError

  4. Read the relevant section in TEST_STATUS_REPORT.md

  5. Detailed analysis of each failure type
  6. Common causes and solutions

  7. Try a different AI prompt

  8. Some AI tools work better with different prompt styles
  9. Try rephrasing the prompt

  10. Run with more verbose output

    pytest tests/bot/test_gateway.py -vv

  11. Check if dependencies are installed

    pip install -e ".[dev]"

🎯 Quick Wins

Want immediate progress? Fix these first (easiest to hardest):

  1. Missing imports - 2 minutes β†’ 5 tests fixed
  2. Leaderboard stats - 5 minutes β†’ 1 test fixed
  3. Path operations - 5 minutes β†’ 1 test fixed
  4. Lesson content type - 10 minutes β†’ 1 test fixed

Total: ~22 minutes to fix 8 tests!
